About Us

Meet our Head Baker

Paula Kilbourn, Founder and Bread Curator

Paula's journey has always been rooted in caring for others.  For many years, she worked as a full-time pediatric ER nurse, a calling that required not only skill and strength, but also immense compassion.  Her work often meant traveling across state lines, sometimes being away from her family for long stretches of time.  Though she poured her heart into helping children and their families during their most vulnerable moments, the time apart from her own loved ones weighed heavily on her.

When an injury forced her to step away from nursing for the moment, Paula suddenly faced a crossroads.  The career she had built her life around came to an end, and with it came uncertainty.  But in the quiet of her own kitchen, she began to discover a new path.  Baking sourdough started as a small comfort - something she could do at home, surrounded by family, while healing both physically and emotionally.

What began as simple loaves soon became something much greater.  Paula found that the same patience and care she once offered her patients could now be poured into flour, water, and salt.  Sourdough gave her a way to stay close to her family, to nurture them daily with wholesome food, and to rediscover a part of herself she hadn't had the time to explore before.

As her skills grew, so did her passion.  Family, friends, and neighbors quickly fell in love with the heart she baked into every loaf, scone, and cookie.  They tasted more than bread - they tasted comfort, community, and nourishment.  Encouraged by this, Paula and her husband Adam decided to build something that reflected their values of health, family and togetherness:  PK Sourdough MicroBakery.

Today, Paula is the soul of the bakery.  Each morning, she tends to her starters with the same dedication she once carried into the hospital.  Every loaf is prepared with patience, every recipe crafted with thoughtfulness, and every bite meant to bring people closer together.  Where once she spent long days away from her family, Paula now spends her time building something with them, for them, and for the community she loves.

Her story is a reminder that even in life's hardest turns, something beautiful can rise.  For Paula, that "something" is sourdough - bread that nourishes the body, comforts the soul, and keeps her close to the people who matter most.
